The LEV project was started by Arafelle Oné, who wrote an
article in the Tamaki Makaurau Lesbian Newsletter about her personal experience and her dreams of a lesbian elders village, where we can live, be cared for and die in. She received a lot of response to her article and started to organise meetings in Auckland and Wellington. Groups have been formed in different locations, to look into the ways of organising our life before and after retirement. The LEV Project aims to provide accommodation options for older Lesbian women in New Zealand across a range of ages, abilities, financial resources, care requirements and life style choices. Lesbian women through out New Zealand have expressed interest in taking steps to achieve these ends. The Auckland LEV group is currently the most advanced of these in terms of developing a legal entity, funding structure and conceptualisation of a particular type of community housing option.
