Auckland Anniversary weekend will see the LEV summer hui in Auckland at the Women's Centre in Grey Lynn, 4 Warnock Street.

On Saturday, 24 January 10 a.m., interested lesbians are cordially invited to check us out. Should you ponder if the village is for you, this will be the time to ask everything you always wanted to know about the Lesbian Elders Village.

Afterwards, we are starting the discussion on life in the village with the intention of shaping the vision. Size, tenure, pivacy and communality are on the table. As always, there will be excellent catering and time for some fun on the side.

Sunday will see our first Special General Meeting. If you are a member of LEV, expect an invitation, including the agenda, in your mailbox soon.

To stay informed about the hui and other events, join our mailing list, or check this website frequently.

The Auckland group met in Leigh 11-13 July for a working weekend. 13 women attended to discuss, make decisions and naturally have some fun (meeting minutes). As a result of this weekend we now have a draft layout for the village and a time line. We also made some fundamental decisions about life in the village and the size of the project. A couple of working groups were formed to continue the work started at the Hui. All in all it was a big success and a good step forward to making our dream come true. If you are interested in the LEV project and want to shape it, the time to participate is now (Contact us).

We will publish the decisions we made in the forum for everybody to add their thoughts. Remember: You have to be registered on the website to be able to see the forum.

Marg Curnow, Ricky Schammall and Megan Halbert are the three women unanimously elected in its first year to translate the Lesbian Elders Village (LEV) vision into land and houses.

Marg, who works in real estate after a long history of community education, was chosen as chairwoman of the LEV incorporated society at its first AGM on June 8. Ricky is secretary and Megan treasurer.

Membership is now open to all lesbians on a sliding scale from $25 to $50, according to what individual women can afford.

Founding members

LEV is now focussed on planning and fundraising, with a mid-winter hui scheduled for July 11 to 13. This will use models to help decide on what type of village the group wants. The hui will be at Leigh from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 July. It will start with a shared meal at 7.30pm and finish around 2pm on the Sunday.

Members visited Earthsong Eco Village at Ranui in June to discuss the practicalities of decision-making and dealing with banks.

Contact Marg for details - phone 0275 729 728 or email mcurnow (at) clear.net.nz. To become a member, send a cheque to Megan Halbert, 145 Konini Road, Titirangi or make an electronic payment to account number 38 9007 0268553 00. Donations are welcome and will soon be tax deductable.

LEV @ Big Gay Out - a late review

Time flies and this story should have been online about 3 month ago. Well, here it finally is. All grammar complaints to the editor, please.

First a big thanks to TMLN. The TMLN lesbians were more than helpful and shared their stall with us. So we used it as a base station for flying our banners and distributing our postcards.

Plentiful and colorful was our silent motto, we had the biggest flags flying in the park! Beautifully crafted in an ongoing Hui effort in January, this was their first major purpose and the wind paid them full respect without tearing them apart.
