Some LEV members were attending the funciton OUT-Line had put on to celebrate Jools and Lynda as their patrons. It was not our party for the Topp Twins but we loved meeting them on that occation and getting an opportunity for a photo shoot. To hear them talking about their roots within, and their commitment to our community was heart warming - and of course we loved them singing 'Untouchable Girls' for their audience.

Thanks Jools and Lynda for being 'untouchable' but approachable girls!

While it would be nice to have a lesbian awareness ad, too, at some point in time (suggestions of who should be staring in it are welcome!), it's great to see some GLBT awareness raising at last:

The Lesbian Elders Village Auckland Incorporated Society held an AGM and hui at Waiwera from April 29 to May 1st.

The determination to continue the process towards a Lesbian Elders Village was renewed after vigorous and open discussion. Acting communally appeared without alternative when envisaging self-determined and supportive conditions in our old age. Even though it was pointed out that it is the responsibility of the larger community, represented by Government, to provide decent living arrangements for all citizens when they are in need of solidarity, it was viewed as unlikely that a recognition of our needs will manifest in policy in the near future. More generally, it was observed that the solidarity owed to the weakest members of civil societies is vanishing at a breathtaking pace.

The current status quo of everyone  fending for herself was declared unsustainable, particularly in light of a changing world. Instead, a desire was expressed to go back to the roots of civilisation, acknowledging that the sharing of resources and commons is in the best interest of every group of people. In all this however, it was recorded that privacy is essential to our well-being, and that the proposed community will resemble a village with good neighbourly relations rather than a commune.

Besides engaged and respectful debates, we enjoyed the hot water at the spa, good food and good company. A strong easterly blew us back into our homes, energised and invigorated for another chapter in our journey together.

LEV at the Outgames Human Rights Conference

Six LEV members (old lesbians?) attended the Human Rights Conference in  Wellington last week. Arafelle, Jan, Marg, Raine, Ruth and Sonya led a workshop attended by 30 where we began a lively conversation about the invisibility of old members of the LGBTI community.

The invisibility is most significant in government planning, policy and provision which fails to take into account  any particular needs we may have. The conversation continued in formal and informal ways throughout the conference where the six of us were pleased to form links with people with similar concerns in Wellington and in Australia and the wider international community. In Melbourne there is Val’s Cafe which is a hub for action and for meeting some of the needs of the older members of our family.

The conference ended on a high note for us when a plea at the plenary for recognition of our needs and for us not to be “driven back into the closet” was met with yells, whistles and a standing ovation.
